The Sunday Recap: Why Al-Aqsa is more than a mosque

Welcome to the Sunday Recap, a new newsletter from +972 Magazine!

At a time when the news from Israel-Palestine is changing and growing more worrisome every day, we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss a single story on our site. So every Sunday, we’re sending out a newsletter with the past week’s articles, special announcements, and invites to upcoming events.

Don’t worry! You’ll be receiving the Sunday Recap in addition to The Landline, our beloved newsletter that comes out mid-week, and which brings our team’s thoughts of the week straight to your inbox.

This week, after the images of Israeli security forces mercilessly beating worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque came to light, +972’s Vera Sajrawi interviewed Jerusalem writer Jalal Abukhater who provided the context behind the violent raid, and explained why the mosque is more than just a place of worship for Palestinians. +972 contributor Hebh Jamal spoke to anti-Zionist Jews living in Germany who are increasingly being targeted with accusations of antisemitism, a charge usually directed at Palestinians, in order to silence their activism.

Meanwhile, Dahlia Scheindlin explained how the idea of a constitution, now resurrected by the anti-government protest movement, has been repeatedly pursued throughout Israel’s history — only to be continually foiled by opposition to enshrining equality. Zena Agha laid out how Barcelona’s recent decision to cut its twinning agreement with Tel Aviv spotlights why ties with Israeli localities — especially settlements — are never “apolitical.” And Basel Adra reported on the story of Qamar Aliyan, an 11-year-old Palestinian girl who had her ankle broken after being kicked by Israeli troops, while settlers roamed her family’s property in Umm Lasafa.

One last thing. This is a moment of deep crisis in Israel-Palestine and we need your back. Our journalists are on the frontlines, often facing police or settler violence, making sure you get the best reporting and finest up-to-date analysis from inside the struggle for true democracy between the river and the sea. They can do so because thousands of +972 Magazine readers choose to support our work. If you are not already one of them — now is the time to join!
