I’m thrilled to share some incredible news: The joint investigation into Israel’s covert war on the International Criminal Court, published in collaboration between +972 Magazine, Local Call and The Guardian, has won the Investigation of the Year. The prestigious award was presented to The Guardian by the Press Awards, which recognizes excellence in British journalism.
This groundbreaking investigation uncovered Israel’s decade-long surveillance of senior International Criminal Court officials and Palestinian human rights advocates, as part of an effort to undermine the court’s probe into its alleged war crimes.
This achievement was the result of months of meticulous work by myself, Yuval Abraham, Harry Davies, and Bethan McKernan.
The judges praised the investigation, describing it as “brave and collaborative journalism.” They emphasized its significance as “an extremely important story, diligently reported, with global ramifications,” noting that it ticks all the boxes for “exclusivity, impact and investigative skills.”
Significantly, our investigation was published shortly after the ICC prosecutor announced intentions to seek arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yuav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. It became a critical resource for dozens of international media outlets, which relied on our findings to provide essential context and deepen global understanding of the issue.
Awards like this highlight the critical role independent journalism plays in holding power to account, and help us further spread the truth and reach more people with information vital to understanding the situation in Israel-Palestine.
