Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! Here’s your wrap-up of the latest articles from our contributors, including our colleagues at Local Call.
On March 28, Israeli settlers carried out a pogrom in the West Bank village of Jinba, in Masafer Yatta, with the full backing — and later, participation — of the Israeli army. After they assaulted residents and left a child bleeding from his head, Oren Ziv reported, some of those same settlers came back in their army uniforms and proceeded to ransack the village, destroying everything in their path.
With the resumption of Israel’s military onslaught and a full blockade on Gaza, hospitals in the Strip are barely functioning — the product of Israel’s deliberate strategy to dismantle Gaza’s health care system. Inside the hospitals, as Mahmoud Mushtaha wrote, treatable patients face a “slow, quiet death”.
Meron Rapoport described how, unable to immediately expel Gazans en masse, Israel is preparing to forcibly displace the entire population of Gaza — through a combination of evacuation orders and intense bombardment — into an enclosed and possibly fenced-off area, and letting starvation and desperation do the rest. Without mincing words, he says, this latest vision can be summed up in just two words: concentration camp.
In partnership with The Intercept, Hanno Hauenstein revealed that Berlin’s immigration authorities are moving to deport four young foreign residents on allegations related to participation in protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, despite not being convicted of any crimes — an unprecedented move that raises serious concerns over civil liberties in Germany.
And for Palestinian students at Israeli universities — many of whom have been harassed, suspended, or arrested since October 7 for expressing their views — navigating campus life has become an exercise in psychological survival. Guevara Bader wrote about their schizophrenic existence: learning to suppress their identity and emotions, unable to speak about the carnage in Gaza, while trapped by the guilt of their relative safety.
