Newborns freeze to death in Gaza tents

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! Here’s your wrap-up of the latest articles from our contributors, including our colleagues at Local Call.

As Israel continues its campaign of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza, 2.3 million Palestinians concentrated in the center and southern parts of the Strip are desperately trying to survive the harsh winter in makeshift shelters. Ruwaida Kamal Amer spoke with Palestinian parents in tent camps who, after at least six infants have died from exposure to the cold, fear that their children could be next.

In recent months, the so-called “Bibileaks” scandal has caused a media firestorm in both Israel and the UK — but in Germany, after Bild published pro-Netanyahu disinformation, there has been little public outcry. Germany’s largest newspaper, Hanno Hauenstein argues, has long been a platform for pro-Israel messaging, and its role in the scandal highlights the need for a broader reckoning on Israel-Palestine in German media.

For Meron Rapoport, a sober assessment of the political forces in Israel-Palestine, the wider region, and the world as a whole does not elicit much optimism that the ongoing catastrophe of the past 15 months — particularly what Palestinians are enduring in Gaza — may soon come to an end. But the task now, he argues, is to identify and widen the cracks in Israel’s war machine: Israelis’ waning trust in Netanyahu and the direction of the war, along with shifts in global public opinion and accountability.

And Santiago Montag reported from Yarmouk, Syria’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, which was brutally besieged and almost entirely depopulated during the civil war. Now, with the fall of the Assad regime, returnees are starting to rebuild but face extreme poverty and deep political uncertainty.

We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, as the Gaza war reaches extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the region. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
