Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! Here’s your wrap-up of the latest articles from our contributors, including our colleagues at Local Call.
On Monday morning, Palestinians in Khilet al-Dabe’ — one of the main villages in Masafer Yatta featured in the documentary “No Other Land” — woke up to the sight of bulldozers approaching. As Basel Adra reported, by noon, Israeli forces had demolished homes, wells, and even caves, leaving families with nowhere to shelter.
Ahmed Ahmed and Ruwaida Amer wrote about the Palestinian children starving under Israel’s total blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has continued for over two months. With over 70,000 children now hospitalized for malnutrition, and 3,500 under the age of five facing an imminent risk of death from starvation, parents are watching helplessly as their children waste away.
On Thursday, armed Israeli forces entered and shut down six UNRWA-operated schools in East Jerusalem, leaving 800 Palestinian students without classrooms. When the Israeli Education Ministry issued closure orders on April 8, they claimed to be protecting the students — but in reality, Gil Gertel argued, the move is part of a coordinated effort to dismantle Palestinian institutions in the city.
This weekend, a coalition of 50 Israeli peace and shared-society organizations convened in Jerusalem for the “People’s Peace Summit,” a two-day conference filled with dialogue workshops, interfaith prayers, and panels on political solutions. Yet as, Orly Noy wrote, the summit took place amid an ongoing genocide — which none of its events addressed — raising troubling questions about the Israeli “peace camp” and its role in this moment.
And since October 7, Israeli police have arrested hundreds for their opposition to the Gaza war and distributed photos of several detainees in degrading positions, some handcuffed and blindfolded in front of the Israeli flag. In “Portraits of fascism,” a special project from +972 Magazine and Local Call, Oren Ziv spoke with seven who agreed to be photographed again — this time on their own terms.
