Meet Israel’s new class of army refusers |
||
Welcome to the Sunday Recap! This week, after 230 young Israelis declared they will refuse the military draft, Oren Ziv spoke with eight of them about the occupation, the judicial coup, and conscientious objection as a tool of protest. A speech delivered by one of the refusers, Yahli Agai, was also re-published on our pages, in which she stated that Israelis have long closed their eyes to the oppression of Palestinians, Mizrahim, and African asylum seekers — but that her generation can be different. Following a violent protest in Tel Aviv between pro- and anti-regime Eritreans, which was exacerbated by a brutal police crackdown, Guli Dolev-Hashiloni explained how Israeli authorities have turned a blind eye to the threat that Eritreans face from their own government. Following outrage over an Israeli diplomat’s meeting with a far-right, antisemitic Romanian party, Eitay Mack pointed out that mainstream European parties have been just as complicit in the state’s apartheid policies. And Vera Sajrawi reported on the Ramallah launch of a new Palestinian literary magazine, Fikra, which aims to be a creative and uncensored platform for writers and artists in the homeland and the diaspora. One last thing. This is a moment of deep crisis in Israel-Palestine and we need you to have our back.
