Israel’s endgame in northern Gaza

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! Here’s your wrap-up of the latest articles from our contributors.

In recent weeks, Israel has intensified its efforts to disrupt the work of international solidarity activists in the occupied West Bank, especially those supporting Palestinians during the olive harvest. Oren Ziv interviewed several deported activists, who described threatening interrogations, false charges, and swift expulsion orders by a new police unit established by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Two newly-published documents — a report from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, and a letter signed by dozens of American medical professionals — outline the scale of Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s health system and medical workers. Liat Kozma and Lee Mordechai spoke with three of the letter’s signatories to understand how Israel’s assault threatens the very possibility of sustaining life in the Strip.

Even with the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, according to Meron Rapoport, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has no interest in ending the war: his death could make the return of Palestinian governance in Gaza more likely, which, for Israel’s government, is a scenario that must be thwarted.

In the run-up to the U.S. elections, Tariq Kenney-Shawa argued that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been Israel’s perfect partners in genocide: by masking their support for Israel with hollow humanitarian gestures and empathy for Palestinians, he suggests that the Democratics have diluted domestic and international pressure to end the war. For former Biden staffer Lily Greenberg Call, who resigned in protest over the administration’s Gaza policy, a Trump presidency would be catastrophic for progressive movements and Palestinians — while under Harris, there will at least be a chance to build power towards a permanent ceasefire and arms embargo.

And Idan Landau wrote about Israel’s endgame in northern Gaza, arguing that debates over the details of the so-called ‘Generals’ Plan’ distract from the true brutality of Israel’s latest operation — one that drops the veneer of humanitarian considerations, killing and expelling Palestinian residents and laying the groundwork for settlements.
