Israel’s starvation campaign ravages Gaza |
||
|
Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! Over 60 Palestinians in Gaza have starved to death under Israel’s blockade since Monday alone, with international aid groups warning of mass starvation across the enclave. Ahmed Ahmed reported from Gaza City, where the cries of hungry children echo through tent camps. “My body is breaking down. My mother is collapsing from exhaustion. My cousin cheats death every day for a morsel of aid.” Ruwaida Amer wrote a searing personal essay about trying to survive Israel’s starvation campaign, and watching helplessly as Gaza’s children die of hunger. Yuval Abraham investigated Israel’s use of “double tap” airstrikes to target rescue efforts in Gaza: in the aftermath of bombings, the Israeli army routinely fires on Palestinian rescue workers, paramedics, and other civilians to prevent them from saving the wounded. The investigation was published in partnership with Local Call. Held in Israeli detention without charge for 7 months, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya — who was the director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital — has been beaten, starved, isolated, and cut off from his family. Shatha Yaish spoke to Abu Safiya’s lawyer, who said that Israel is detaining him as a ‘bargaining chip.’ And Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man argued that with Gaza’s annihilation in plain sight, the question is what can compel global intervention to end Israel’s genocide — and if this, like Jewish leaders urged Allied forces to do during the Nazi Holocaust, is Gaza’s ‘bomb the tracks’ moment. *** We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, as the Gaza war reaches extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the region. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
