Israel’s own data shows at least 83% of Gaza’s dead were civilians |

|
Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! In a joint investigation by +972 Magazine, Local Call, and The Guardian, Yuval Abraham reveals that, according to classified Israeli intelligence data from May, Israel believed it had killed some 8,900 militants in its attacks on Gaza. Measured against the Gaza Health Ministry’s death toll of 53,000 — which the army itself considers reliable — that figure implies a civilian death rate of at least 83 percent, a proportion with few parallels in modern warfare. Meanwhile, as evidence of Israel’s mass killing, starvation, and displacement in Gaza circulates in real time, the paradoxical response of many Israelis is: it’s fake, and they deserved it. Ron Dudai examined how Israelis turned atrocity denial into an art (originally published in Local Call). Finally, a generational shift, growing isolationism, and nationalist anger are fracturing the GOP’s decades-long pro-Israel consensus. Ben Lorber analyzed why Israel’s iron grip on the American right is loosening — and why the left must remain cautious of the motives driving this new faction. *** We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, as the Gaza war reaches extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the region. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
