Forget symbolic statehood – the world must recognize Israeli apartheid

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

On Monday, Palestinian photojournalist Maryam Abu Daqqa was killed by the Israeli army in a “double tap” airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, along with four other reporters. Ruwaida Amer wrote about her friendship with Maryam, and how the attack makes their plea ever more urgent: Palestinian journalists need international protection now, or Gaza’s voice will be silenced.

Oren Ziv and Shatha Yaish reported on last week’s siege of Al-Mughayyir, a Palestinian village east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, by the Israeli army and settlers. With a convoy of bulldozers that destroyed the village’s olive groves, the siege was a joint exercise in intimidation and re-engineering of Palestinian space.

And as more countries officially recognize a Palestinian state, Alaa Salama argued that the world should forget symbolic statehood — and instead recognize Israeli apartheid. The global political theater of “recognizing a Palestinian state” only creates the illusion of action, but delays the real remedies: sanctioning and isolating Israel’s apartheid regime.

Finally, after a long hiatus, +972’s podcast is back! In the first episode of the relaunch, Ghousoon Bisharat spoke with Orly Noy about the connection between the genocide in Gaza, escalating violence in the West Bank, and Israeli belligerence across the wider region. You can listen to their conversation on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube or on +972 Magazine
