How Netanyahu is sabotaging phase two of the Gaza ceasefire

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

On Tuesday evening, Israeli settlers launched one of the most devastating pogroms on the Palestinian communities of Masafer Yatta in recent memory, attacking three villages simultaneously with what appeared to be an unprecedented level of coordination with the Israeli army. As settlers set homes ablaze and looted livestock across three villages for over five hours, Basel Adra reported, Israeli soldiers blocked ambulances, arrested victims, and even took part in beatings.

Israeli doctor Michal Feldon explained how Israel’s restrictions on shelter and medicine in Gaza have left displaced families helpless as newborns succumb to exposure and preventable disease (originally published on Local Call). Ten infants under the age of 1 have died from hypothermia and extreme cold this winter, leading medical experts in the Strip to coin a new term: “wet tent syndrome.”

After a historic mass demonstration in the northern city of Sakhnin last week, leaders of Israel’s four major Arab-led parties signed a document expressing their intention to revive the Joint List ahead of this year’s election. Abed Abou Shhadeh argued that beyond electoral arithmetic, the reunification of Arab parties is a step toward rebuilding Palestinian political infrastructure in Israel and combating social fragmentation (originally published on Local Call).

Muhammad Shehada unpacked how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is sabotaging phase two of the Gaza ceasefire. By undermining the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a new Palestinian technocratic body supervised by U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, Israel is trying to make Gaza appear ungovernable — and prove the need for its sustained military rule.

Over the past two years, Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations have published several reports on the dire condition of Palestinians incarcerated in Israel. Lee Mordechai and Liat Kozma spoke to lawyers about the impossible task of representing Palestinian detainees, pointing to the absence of state and judicial oversight that allow Israel to run its prisons as ‘torture facilities’ with full impunity (originally published on Local Call).

And Marta Vidal and Meriem Laribi wrote about the theft at the heart of Israel’s booming wine industry: after seizing Palestinian land, settlers are replanting it with vineyards, then exporting their wine as “Made in Israel” to obscure its origins. Now the West Bank constitutes one of Israel’s most significant wine-producing regions — alongside the Galilee, the center of the country, the coastal plains, and, in first place, the Golan Heights, occupied from Syria.
