Something is shifting in Israel’s peace camp

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

In Jayyous, a village whose farmland lies partly in the so-called “seam zone,” Palestinian farmers have been served dozens of new stop-work orders. Local Call Editor Meron Rapoport reported on how Israel’s war on the West Bank has now come for greenhouses –– part of a broader effort to push Palestinians off their land.

It has been three weeks since settlers fenced off the path to school for students in Umm Al-Khair. Their teacher, Tariq Hathaleen, who has joined his students alongside Palestinian, Israeli and international activists in demonstrations at the barrier, wrote that despite global outrage the blockade remains in place. Still, he insists, “we refuse to let them win.”

Charlotte Ritz-Jack and Dana Mills reported on the labor shifts reshaping Israel’s perpetual war economy. Long a cornerstone of Israel’s low-wage economy, Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza have been frozen out since October 7, replaced by an influx of migrant workers employed under precarious conditions

In Israeli media, Israeli-Palestinian peace is often dismissed as irrelevant. But at last weekend’s 5,000-strong “People’s Peace Summit” in Tel Aviv, Local Call editor Meron Rapoport saw signs that Israel’s embattled may be abandoning old formulas and embracing a politics of resistance.

In attendance at that same peace conference was Samah Wattad, who left questioning both the event itself and its emphasis on moral conviction over action. At a time of genocide and ethnic cleansing, she argued, another peace conference is evidence that the Israeli left is speaking only to itself.

We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, one defined by genocide, apartheid, and Jewish supremacy from the river to the sea. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
