A year in photos: Palestine-Israel in 2013

It is difficult to summarize and reflect on 365 days, especially in a place as eventful as Palestine-Israel. This year, Activestills photographers covered hundreds of events, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Israeli soldiers arrest a child during the weekly demonstration in Kufr Qaddum, a West bank village located east of Qalqiliya, on January 25, 2013. There have been regular demonstrations in Kufr Qaddum since July, 2011, protesting the blocking of the main road east of the village which used to link it to Nablus. Israeli border policemen arrest a Palestinian photographer during clashes that erupted on ‘Jerusalem Day’. Damascus Gate, East Jerusalem, May 8, 2013. More than 42 Palestinians were arrested throughout the day, including four journalists. ‘Jerusalem Day’ is an Israeli holiday which celebrates capturing East Jerusalem from Jordan during the Six-Day War of 1967. Though Israel then annexed East Jerusalem and considers it a part of the State of Israel, the move was never recognized internationally and East Jerusalem is still considered occupied Palestinian territory under international law. (Activestills.org)

According to Jordan Valley Solidarity, communities in the Jordan Valley survive on 20 liters of water per person a day. The World Health Organization recommends 100 liters. In the adjacent illegal Israeli settlements in Jordan Valley, average water consumption is 451 liters per person a day. (Activestills.org)

The Israeli army demolished Khirbet al-Makhoul twice in the preceding weeks. The army also prevented humanitarian aid organizations from delivering tents and aid to residents. After the building of the wall in the West Bank village of Ni’lin, many farmers were separated from their agriculture land. The garden was set with many flowers put in empty gas canisters and inaugurated during the eight Bil’in popular struggle conference. Weeks earlier, the Israeli army closed its investigation into Bassem’s death without handing down any indictments. Family members and friends celebrate as they wait in the Mukata Presidential Compound for the release of Palestinians prisoners, Ramallah, West Bank, October, 29, 2013.  Twenty-six Palestinian prisoners from Gaza and the West Bank were set to be released part of the second stage of a prisoner release deal secured by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry ahead of renewed peace talks. A total of 104 Palestinian prisoners, all jailed before the start of the Oslo Peace Talks 20 years ago, are eventually supposed to be released over the next seven months. (Activestills.org)

Sheik Sayah Aturi is welcomed by family members and activists as he walks out from the Be’er Sheva Court, following his release from jail, November 28, 2013. Sayah was arrested on November 20, after his village al-Araqib was demolished by Israeli authorities. He remained in jail for over a week because he refused to sign an order to stay away from his own land. The court decided to release him to a week of house arrest outside his village. (Activestills.org)

Israeli Bedouin youth throw stones at police during a Day of Rage protest against the Prawer-Begin Plan, on road 31 near Hura, Israel, on November 30, 2013. Police fired tear gas and arrested at least 10 protesters. Activists declared a ‘day of rage’ across Israel and Palestine in protest against the Israeli government’s Prawer-Begin Plan, which if implemented will displace tens of thousands of Bedouin citizens from their homes in the Negev desert.
