The Sde Teiman leak debate reflects Israel’s moral decay

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

Over the course of six days last week, the inaugural International Festival for Women’s Cinema was held in a tent in central Gaza, featuring nearly 80 films from over two dozen countries spanning the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Ibtisam Mahdi spoke to organizers and attendees, who described how the festival was ‘an affirmation that Gaza loves life despite the genocide.’

The Israeli army’s top legal official is being hounded over her role in leaking a video of Israeli prison guards raping a Palestinian captive inside the Sde Teiman detention facility last year, a scandal that has split the nation. Yet both sides of the debate ignore her complicity in the genocide, Ori Goldberg argued — a reflection of Israel’s moral decay.

Jonathan Adler spoke with Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson, authors of a new book that offers a detailed roadmap of how to end Israeli apartheid and lay the groundwork for a a democratic future: from installing a caretaker government and abolishing unjust laws, to merging security forces and disarming militias.

For the past two years, +972 Magazine’s team of journalists in Gaza have covered all angles of Israel’s onslaught — from Beit Lahiya in the north to Rafah in the south — to illuminate what Israel sought to keep hidden, while enduring the very displacement, starvation, and loss that they reported on. In a special illustrated timeline, we recount the genocide through their eyes.

And on the latest episode of The +972 Podcast, Dikla Taylor-Sheinman spoke with veteran Palestinian activist Munther Amira about what drew him to the popular struggle in the West Bank, and how a surge of violence and repression since October 7 has forced a rethink of the meaning of resistance.

We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, as the Gaza war reaches extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the region. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
