Is Israel’s genocide economy on the brink?

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

Last Sunday’s attack on Jewish Australians celebrating the first night of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach was the worst the community has ever experienced. But Em Hilton argued that we don’t have the luxury to grieve silently: before the blood had even dried, the massacre was being used to justify repressing Palestine solidarity and retribution against Muslims.

Amos Brison spoke with economist Shir Hever about the state of Israel’s genocide economy — and how the Gaza war mobilization propped up a ‘zombie economy’ that appears to function but lacks any future horizon. Meanwhile, Ahmed Ahmed reported on the liquidity crisis in Gaza, where most banks and ATMs remain destroyed, Israel is blocking the entry of new banknotes, and Palestinians are left at the mercy of cash brokers and cryptocurrency companies.

Standing Together, the Jewish-Arab movement inside Israel, is celebrating its 10th anniversary after a period of rapid expansion. But as it grows, Samah Watad reflected, so do questions about its political stances, its electoral ambitions, the limits of binational organizing — and whether it can bear the weight of its contradictions.

And on the latest episode of The +972 Podcast, Ghousoon Bisharat spoke with Palestinian theologian and lecturer John Munayer about the Palestinian Christian experience, exploring how the community has resisted its depoliticization and the tradition of anti-colonial liberation theology.
