Earlier this week, for the first time since she immigrated to Israel at the age of nine, Local Call editor Orly Noy did not stand for the two-minute siren on Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. A state that commits genocide, she argued, cannot meaningfully commemorate the Holocaust.

On April 3, representatives of Israel’s four Arab parties — Hadash, Balad, Ra’am, and Ta’al — met to discuss the revival of their joint electoral alliance ahead of the October elections, building on a framework first outlined in Sakhnin earlier this year. Samah Salaime spoke with representatives of all four factions about whether the Joint List can endure, despite deep ideological divides (originally published on Local Call).

Basel Adra reported on a new tool of Israeli intimidation in Masafer Yatta. In recent months, soldiers have briefly and arbitrarily arrested dozens of West Bank Palestinians — many blindfolded, beaten, and then released without explanation. 

It remains unclear whether the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that took effect Thursday will hold. In any case, Dimi Reider argued, it’s unlikely to stop Israel’s expansionist ambitions. Efforts to establish buffer zones and “natural borders,” he wrote, suggest that ongoing ethnic cleansing in southern Lebanon is far from over.
