The Haredi draft revolt threatening to bring Israel to a standstill

Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

On Friday, a few hundred Palestinians in Gaza took to the streets to protest Hamas rule, far short of the mass turnout organizers had hoped for. Muhammad Shehada wrote about how threats and manipulations were distorting the message of the ‘June 26 movement’ even before the protests began — as has happened with previous mobilizations in the enclave.

Local Call’s Oren Ziv reported from two unrecognized Palestinian villages in the Naqab, where hundreds of Bedouin citizens of Israel have been left homeless after being forced to dismantle their own homes — the latest chapter in a decades-long cycle of displacement.

In recent weeks, confrontations between the police and the Haredi community in Israel have reached a new peak, as the government seeks to enforce military service for all. For Eli Bitan, who unpacked the Haredi draft revolt threatening to bring Israel to a standstill, ultra-Orthodox refusal is revealing cracks in the country’s militaristic consensus.

At the beginning of the war in February, Israel and the United States vowed to crush Iran and its proxies. Yet despite its losses, Lior Sternfeld argued, the regime emerges stronger and with more leverage than before — the only logical outcome of a completely irrational war.

Mohammed and Yousef Zaanoun sent a photo essay from a displacement camp in Gaza City, where boxing has become a lifeline for dozens of Palestinian girls — who dream of one day representing Palestine on the international stage.

And on the latest episode of the +972 Podcast, Ben Reiff spoke to architect Eyal Weizman about his new book, “Ungrounding,” which explains how the systematic erasure of Gaza’s built environment is aimed at extinguishing Palestinian life in the Strip.

We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, one defined by genocide, apartheid, and Jewish supremacy from the river to the sea. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
