Life in a laboratory of Israeli ethnic cleansing |
||
|
Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap! As medicine runs out under Israel’s blockade and care is routinely disrupted, conditions once considered manageable have become increasingly fatal. Ahmed Dremly spoke with dialysis and cancer patients in the enclave who have been left to die slowly, waiting for treatment that may never come. Much of international diplomacy and debate about Gaza revolves around its future. But as Mahmoud Mushtaha detailed, the governance crisis is now: By blocking a civil government from replacing Hamas, Israel has created a power vacuum in Gaza — and left Palestinians with nowhere to turn. Shatha Yaish reported on how Israel’s roadblocks are choking emergency care in the West Bank: With proliferating closures, checkpoints, and settler attacks, Palestinian medics say routine ambulance journeys have become life-or-death ordeals. Northeast of Ramallah, the Palestinian village of Al-Mughayyir faces an existential battle against settler-soldier violence and economic siege — what resident Haroon Bshara calls a living laboratory of Israeli ethnic cleansing. But despite the many losses, he insists his village will remain (originally published on Local Call). On Oct. 27, Israeli citizens will vote in the first elections to take place since the genocide in Gaza. Areej Sabbagh-Khoury argued that Palestinian participation in these elections must be reimagined: Even if the vote cannot end settler-colonial rule, Palestinians in Israel should use their citizenship to protect their people and the conditions for resistance. And for Omar H. Rahman, PA parliamentary elections scheduled for Nov. 28 could be the political opening Palestine needs. While driven by international pressure that lets Israel off the hook, the upcoming vote still gives Palestinians a rare chance to confront an obstinate leadership. *** We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine, one defined by genocide, apartheid, and Jewish supremacy from the river to the sea. It has never been more vital for our journalists, led by Palestinians and Israelis, to report on and analyze what is happening on the ground and beyond, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. +972 Magazine is proof that an alternative is possible — and we need your support to increase our impact.
