Welcome to +972’s Sunday Recap!

In the week since their new documentary “NAZA” premiered at Venice Film Festival, directors Yuval Abraham (a reporter for +972 Magazine) and Rachel Szor have been the target of relentless attacks from Israel’s government and far-right activists. +972 Magazine condemns this campaign of incitement, which only proves how much Israel fears the truth — whoever is speaking it.

Local Call’s Oren Ziv and Baker Zoubi reported from Israel’s north, where young Jewish settlers recently established a West Bank-style outpost near the Palestinian town of Majd Al-Krum. Although it was temporarily evacuated this week following sustained protests, Palestinians fear the encampment is only the start of efforts by the Israeli right to further “Judaize” the Galilee.

At the beginning of September, in the span of a week, Israeli bulldozers demolished Al-Taban and northern Fakhit, two neighboring Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta. After witnessing the demolitions, Basel Adra spoke to residents who described how “everything necessary for human life was erased”; when they tried to help each other stay on the land, soldiers came to make arrests.

Britain’s decision earlier this month to ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements, Hugh Lovatt argued, signals a growing Western break with decades of empty rhetoric and inaction. But to be effective, it must be followed by a comprehensive strategy with like-minded allies to push to end Israel’s occupation.

And Xavier Abu Eid explored why Latin America is key to Israel’s diplomatic impunity: as it alienates traditional allies, Israel is deepening ties with a new wave of right-wing populist leaders who are willing to shield it from accountability.
